Mexico Auto Insurance – Where's the Best Place to Buy?

Why is this an issue?

The problem is, even if you happen to carry US or Canadian auto insurance that includes coverage near the border region, it does not include liability protection for you against the damages you have done to others and you are held in Mexico until you provide adequate compensation.

Mexican law officials require that visitors compensate for a wide array of potential expenses ranging from financial liability from injury or death of innocent bystanders to property damage and sometimes medical expenses for people in your vehicle.

It is also important to remember that the Republic of Mexico will not officially recognize any policy unless it is written by an approved Mexican insurer. This explains why is it vital to purchase a Mexican insurance policy from an officially licensed company with permission to conduct business in Mexico.

It is of the utmost importance that you purchase Mexico auto insurance prior to entering the country, because you will have a better understanding about what you are getting and MORE importantly, you can see what you are NOT getting!

For example, there are insurers at the border who sell annual insurance policies. What they don't tell you is that the policy has a provision which states that if you are in Mexico for more than 90 days within that annual period, the policy is void.

Despite the fact that Mexican car insurance can be secured by a vendors near the border, buying your insurance online and ahead of time can avoid complications.

You should ask yourself:

  • If I drive up to a booth with a nice vehicle, they know I'm a captive buyer. Will the salesman increase the cost or adjust the fee based on what they think I can afford to pay?
  • Is the insurer A. M. Best "A" Rated. If not? Why not?
  • Do I have the proper coverage for my specific vehicle?
  • Understanding Mexico Auto Insurance is a-la-carte, what do I need?
  • Understanding Mexican Insurance is a-la-carte, what is covered?
  • What is the worst actual exposure in Mexico?
  • Does my insurance cover the places I plan to visit?
  • Am I paying the right price? Am I getting value for my money, or am I being taken advantage of ?
  • Why do some policies add taxes and high fees and others do not?

Purchasing Mexico auto insurance online is easily the fastest, most reliable, convenient option. Sites with various policy choices and sites that allow comparing and customization of quotes are usually a safe bet.

What should I be looking for?

Unless you can write what could be a large check quickly, liability insurance is the minimum need for motorists. However, the possibility of an investigation in the event of a serious collision that is your fault means that may not be enough. A complete policy that covers the required bases should meet these basic standards:

  • Liability Limits that meet my budget
  • Medical evacuation protection and travel assistance
  • Car rental
  • Medical expenses for both driver and passengers
  • Physical damage and theft of the vehicle
  • Legal assistance (including bail bond)
  • Roadside assistance

It is important that the plan covers the duration of your entire trip. If you plan on staying in Mexico a couple of weeks or longer, you may want to consider a longer policy. Based on what types of activities you may want to enjoy and where, you may also consider a plan with medical emergency coverage.

And finally, when all is said and done and you have purchased your policy, make sure you receive the following:

  • An official, authentic Mexican auto insurance policy
  • Instructions in case of accident and important policy information
  • Vital phone numbers
  • Premium payment receipt

Make sure to keep your information with you at all times during your stay in Mexico. Don't forget to make copies!
